About
I specialize in 19th century Britain, Ireland, and the British Empire. My research concentrates on the connections and clashes between politics and culture, as expressed in the fine arts, especially architecture and painting. I am currently working on a book on the building of the new Houses of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s, and am editing the diary of Sir George Hayter, who was Queen Victoria 's portrait artist and a noted political portraitist. At Duquesne University, I teach The Shaping of the Modern World course as well as courses in British, Irish, and European History.
